Red Flags! Why don't we listen?

I was befriended by a not so tall boy with long fro like hair, he was light skinned with black features he seemed nice and genuine, a talker, he liked to talk about himself that's for sure. I thought he was cute, but definitely not the type I regularly dated.

I attended my first ever church camp in San Diego with my church group that I found 6 months prior. The boy and I ended up chatting one evening after a conference, it was easy talking to him, we had small talk about who we were and where I came from, the conversation was not to interesting.

I had known who he was from seeing him at church on a weekly basis. He was sort of a celebrity in our church group everyone knew of him like he was something big on our church campus. Girls would talk like he would be a prize to be won to who ever married him. So when he approached me to chat at the conference I was little taken back that he noticed me, a baby christian who just found the Lord. I was not the caliber he was use to dating.
As the days went on we talked a bit more everyday, he noticed that I had a my nails perfectly manicured and asked if I can do his nails that night. I said yes.
He came to by room that night and we hung out outside the room... of course. As we sat on the hotel floor outside the room I gave him a manicure. We talked and talked and talked and I guess he trusted me to share a secret that he was carrying. I told him I wont tell anyone and he begun to tell me he liked one of the girls that was here at camp with us. I asked who and he told me Denise, I acted happy for him but why is this a secret I asked. As I starred at him to talk his mouth opened and what seemed like slow motion he said "my best friend likes her too" "we both like her and we are waiting for her to choose one of us" "she is confused, we had both dated her in the past at one time and now we both want her" I was shocked that this church celebrity was going through this, from the outside you would never guess that this person was in a competition with his "best friend" over a girl. It was odd and I was confused that he would betray is "best friend" like this but hey who am I to judge!

She picked the "best friend" by the way... I often wonder if she chose him would my future ended up different?
